The Irish text and accompanying Ogham (Tree Alphabet) have been carefully translated and laid out with attention to historical authenticity and meaning. Bean Síde – The Banshee “Bean” means woman. “Síd” or “Síde” refers to a fairy mound or Otherworld dwelling. Bean Síde therefore means “Woman of the fairy mound” or “Fairy woman.” In early Irish belief, the síd were ancient burial mounds and earthworks believed to be entrances to the Otherworld. Over time, the word also came to describe the Otherworld itself and the beings who dwell there. The banshee is not originally a ghost or a demon. In tradition, she is an Otherworldly woman attached to certain Gaelic families, especially old noble lineages. Her role is not to cause death, but to foretell it through her keening cry. The inscription on the piece reads: “Is é a gol do·gní bás follus.” “It is her cry that makes death manifest.” This reflects the traditional belief that her wail reveals the coming of death. The banshee tradition comes from medieval Irish literature and early modern Gaelic folklore, particularly family-based death omen lore. Badb Badb is an ancient war goddess from early Irish mythology, often associated with the Mórrígan and Macha. Her name can mean crow or battle fury. Clíodna Clíodna is a fairy woman associated with Munster, especially the southern coast. In medieval tradition she is connected with the síd, the sea, and Otherworldly beauty.
